There is an intensity and authenticity to the works of Proud Theatre that accurately conveys many of the extremely harsh realities many of these youth encounter in their day-to-day lives. However, alongside these painful truths, the youth infuse a sense of resilience, hope and idealism. Throughout a Proud Theater performance there is interwoven a youthful optimism, enthusiasm, and sense of humor that is pervasive and uplifting. Through their creative expressions, these youth share their dreams for a world where things can be different, where everyone will be accepted simply for who they are. One can’t help but leave a performance with a sense of greater hope for the future.
The result is award-winning, compelling, and honest theater that evokes poignantly and tenderly the unique challenges these teens face defining themselves and their relationships. Proud Theater has the potential to perform transformative educational work about the meaning of the LGBTQ experience to powerful effect. Whether the audience consists of teachers, other students, or a diverse variety of community members of all ages and backgrounds—all audience members agree: Proud Theater is theater that gets people thinking, and often inspires them to action.
